About HtEdit.com - More Details.

HtEdit is a Server-Based and Live, Content Management System (CMS).
It’s a program that has been designed to give you absolute control and capability to manage the content of your existing website – without the fear or risk of messing things up. So often we hear about people who have destroyed their valuable website because they were given access to the HTML files on the web-server, but not given sufficient training nor adequate tools to manage those files safely.
HtEdit manages certain pages and certain sections within those pages to allow you full scope of editing within certain predetermined confines, and sets up a whole range of very intuitive and easy to use tools to see you get the job done in the easiest possible way.

Additionally, a major benefit of the HtEdit system is that it can be used anywhere that you have Internet access – it doesn’t require you to install anything on your PC! Lots of users call into Internet cafes or hotel lobbies and update their websites live and “on the go”.
You will find that this is quite probably the most intuitive, safe and easy to use
Content Management System (CMS) available anywhere in the world!

Quick Usage Instructions:

Logging In:

  • Go to www.your_domain_name.com/hteditor/hteditor.cgi
Note substitute your actual domain name – above
  • Enter your supplied user name and password
    • Option… You may check the box “Remember Me” if your PC is never accessed by un-trusted people. We recommend that in most instances you do not use this option.
  • Press Login button.

Preparing to Edit:

  • Click Start Open A Page button (top left)
  • You will see your available directory tree.
Choose the page you wish to edit and click “Open Page”
Take care… from here you can also Delete pages!
    • A representation of the page will appear, with the block that is available for editing enclosed by a red dotted line.
    • The purpose of this is to safeguard page layouts, navigation structures and logos etc. from inadvertent deletion or alteration.
    • Should you need to have alterations made to components outside of your available editing block, please E-mail support@htedit.com
    • There may be a number of editing blocks on a page, or there may be just one.
  • Take a moment or two to familiarise yourself with the two rows of buttons at the top of the editing screen.
    • Most buttons will already be familiar to you as they have been built on the style of common Microsoft program graphics, but hovering on them with a mouse will bring up a tool label to confirm the available action.
    • E.g. Hover on Paste and you will see the confirmation of “Paste”
    • The functions have been built to accommodate a wide range of users, needs and abilities – so some of the buttons you may never need!
    • The essence of HtEdit.Com  is to make Web Page updating easy, so there’s no need to spend time learning something you don’t anticipate using.

Starting to Edit:

  • A good way to edit, often, is to copy and paste existing text, bullets, layouts etc. then to edit those new copies. This lets you maintain existing paragraph layout, text style etc. without having to re-code your new text.
    • You will find familiar “copy” and “paste” buttons in the tool bar at the top of the editing screen.
    • A quick alternative to those buttons is to use the keyboard shortcuts Ctl+c for copy, and Ctl+v for paste.
  • The text in your page has been set using “Cascading Style Sheets” which maintain the style, colour, size and look automatically. So, if you are typing in new text or copying and pasting from another application you will find that it probably “fits” your page look perfectly and may only require an application of “Bold”  or “Italic” to some words to improve the look of the text. “Bold” or “Italic” does not affect the size of the text and may be easily applied by selecting the text and using Ctl+b  or Ctl+I
  • Headings may be applied by copying an existing heading from the editing page (not from the actual Web Site) and pasting it where you want it, then changing the words to your’s.
    • Ie Copy the heading, Paste it, Place your cursor inside the pasted item and then Type your new text. Lastly, Remove the original characters and you will be left with a new headline.

Images:

  • To add an image you must first have it available in the Web Site.
  • Add an image to your part of the Web Site from your local PC by using the button
Upload A File Add A File.
This allows you to place the image anywhere in your “available editing directory tree” but the logical place to put it is in the “images” folder.
  • Use Image Wizard - Select A Picture To Insert (Image Wizard) to select the newly loaded picture and place it in your page.
  • Once the picture is in the page you can double-click it to make adjustments, but please be aware that re-sizing it does not make the file any smaller, it just changes the size-look of the image. The best place to handle image manipulation is before you load it to the Web Site.

Formatting

  • All the usual formatting functions that you find in other word processing programs are available such as right justify, centre, bullet point etc.
    • Undoand Redo Undo and redo buttons are useful too.

Links

  • Create A Link button is for adding Hyperlinks. Select the text that you wish to make a live link, then click the Create A Link button.
    • The link can be to a page that you manage by using the “find in” radio button on the link screen, or to any external link by using the “find URL on the web” radio button.

Tables:

  • Tables may be added using the Table Wizard - Create A Table To Insert Table Wizard button. Generally though, tables imported (by copying and pasting from other programs) will lay up correctly without need for adjustment.

Editor On/Off:

  • You can turn the editor off to see the actual live effects of your work by using the Turn Editor On/Off button

Save and Save As:

  • To finish editing on a page (or to simply save your work as you progress) use the Save Changes “save” button. This saves the page under its existing name.
  • To save the page as a new page with a new name use the Save Page To A New File Name “save as” button.
This is the best way to make new pages within your directory structure.
